“So Jamie, how about a good game of snowball?”

“No Jack, no.”

“Come on,” Jack Frost made a snowball and threw it on Jamie real hard, “Don’t just sit there, join me!”

“No, Jack.” Jamie dusted those crystals off, “Leave me alone.”

“Come on! Jamie! Didn’t you used to love play, Remember? The sleigh, the snowballing and the war with Pitch?” Jack threw some more at Jamie, tried to excite the young soul that once exists.

“I ‘used to’, Jack. I don’t anymore. I’m sorry.” Jamie looked up from his page-turner, his eyes seemed mysterious, “I truly am.”

What..?

“What are you saying? We—”

“I am sorry Jack.” Jamie looked stern and… fun-less.

“I… I don’t understand…You… We were like this!” He crossed his fingers, trying to grasp something that might have been only in his long-forgotten dream, “We’re best friends! We were… We’ve always had fun! We… We…”

His voice was engulfed by the prickling fire. His eyes were full of desperation.

Their hearts were aching tremendously.

“Why? Why… Why… You said I’ll always be there…. I said I’ll always… Why…”

Because it must end. It must end now. Before I…

Jamie caressed Jack Frost’s beautiful hair. The silvery strands that weave when he jumps.

“I’m sorry Jack. I’m sorry.”

Jamie held Jack by the sides, held him real hard, and kissed him on the forehead.

He tastes like snow, Jamie thought, beautiful, cold, and probably too easy to be broken.

He has to go. When the time comes, he needs to leave.

“I wish you… a lifetime of happiness, joy and fun. I wish you to have all the luck in the world. I wish you…” to find someone that will never leave you.

“What.. What are you…” Jack pushed Jamie hard, tried to break free from Jamie’s clutches.

He’s like the wind. He’ll never stay.

He brings snow days. And sorrows he takes.

But when the time comes, he has to leave.

He brings snow days, but he never stays.

Jamie held Jack tightly. So tight that he can feel Jack’s icy skin and his own burning one. “I wish you to be always, always… believed in.”

Without me.

“Are you crazy? What are you doing let me…” He suddenly broke free. Jamie loosened his grip and fall back in to his armchair. His eyes backed to staring at the fireplace, not uttering a word of explanation.

“What is wrong with you!” Jack jumped in front of Jamie, shouted at the depressed old man.

Jamie did not reply. He stared at the fire place, as if there’s something much more intriguing than the agitated spirit of snow.

The doors cracked with a middle-age lady walked in.

“Dad, who are you talking to?”

“Jack Frost, my darling.” Jamie turned and told his red-headed daughter, “But he seemed to have left.”

He smiled at his daughter, with unmistaken sorrow splashed across that heartbreaking smile.

『Wh—What?』

“Right. Jack Frost. The guy that brings snow days.” Jamie’s daughter chuckled at her father’s childish-ness.

『What…』

“Honey don’t laugh. He’s real. At least I thought so…” The old man chuckled as well, “but there is a chance he’s just from my childhood dream. I’m not too sure now either...” He smiled, looked right through Jack.

As if he couldn’t see Jack anymore.

『This… is a joke, isn’t it…? How can you…』

Desperation overwhelmed Jack. He saw Jamie speaking with his daughter about him. He saw Jamie looking at his direction. He remembered how Jamie held him tightly and kissed his forehead with love.

But Jamie doesn’t see him anymore.

『Did you…』 Jack murmured, 『stop... believing?』

Tears rolled down his cheeks, and turned into droplets of snow.

Miracle happened but no one noticed.

He wanted to touch the man. But he’s afraid of what might happen.

He wanted to talk to him. But he fret Jamie couldn’t hear him.

『This is not true. This is... not true. This is not true this is not true this is not true this is not true…』 Jack dashed to the window.

No one heard his desperate scream.

『I’ll… I’ll get some help! There is something wrong with you but I will find a way to fix it. I’ll... I’ll get North and the other guys and… and…』

I’ll... I will…

“I’ll get you believe again! It’s not too late!” He shouted, though no one hears, “I will not give you up… I will not GIVE YOU UP!”

He jumped on the first northern wind blew and rushed to the North Pole.

“Hey Dad, Are you ready? We need to leave soon.”

“Just… 5 more minutes…5 more…”

He looked around his room. It’s not the same one like he had when he’s a little boy.

It’s not the same one like he had when he first met Jack Frost.

He didn’t know who he was, then he fall madly in love with him. The beautiful, mighty, yet naughty and funny creature of snow.

He never told Jack that. But when he first saw the owner of the silvery lock, that image has never leaved his heart.

His laughter, his smile, his touch, his voice, his joy…

Him.

He loves him.

From the start of awe and respect, to friendship, then to him realizing his uncontrolled love for Jack.

He loves him.

He never told Jack about his treasured, vehement love. The moment he realized it, he knew he had to bury it deep within, to die with it.

To die with this love deep buried in his centre.

“Dad?”

“Coming! Coming…”

Jamie looked around his room once more. Jack will probably take a couple of hours before he arrived with the rest. It’s devastating not to be able to see him again, but he has got all he can see of him right in his heart.

He stood up and held on to his crutch.

It is time. He has to leave now.

“The doctor said it’s going to be a small surgery, so shan’t you worried much dad,” His daughter smiled, “We will all be there for you. Besides, I’m sure your friends from the fairy tales are looking forward to seeing you when you are well again, aren’t they. So be strong, alright?”

“Of course.”

IF it is actually a small surgery, he sighed. He had already got the information from doctor about his colon cancer yet his daughter insisted on telling him a faux appendix-removing story.

Considering his age, he will probably not survive this surgery.

So he’ll never see him again.

He’ll never…

But maybe Jack knows. Maybe he’ll return to meet him. Maybe he’ll see the Globe and knows that I’ll always believe.

Maybe… Just maybe… He will…

“Grandpa, who is Jack Frost?” His 6-year-old grandson asked suddenly.

His heart skipped a beat. Sour and bitter. What a love.

What a love this is.

“He’s a great guy, honey, a really great guy…”

“Will I ever see him?”

Maybe, if I lived, I’ll see him again.

I’ll tell him the truth. Maybe even how much I love him.

He’s like the wind. He’ll never stay.

He brings snow days. And sorrows he takes.

But when the time comes, he has to leave.

He brings snow days……

But I hope this time, he can stay. Just for a little while longer…

Just for me….

“Of course Frankie, of course. Just believe in him.”

Cabbie drove along the laminating streets, into the overwhelming darkness, engulfing probably the purest emotion that ever exists…
